info

Disclaimer; Not all of the following information is 100% canon in every sense. I make all the effort I can to stick to canon, but due to Meiling’s lack of backstory or screentime, some of her story, personality and appearance will be based on headcanon.

Name: Hong Meiling (Meiling Hong in western name-order.)

Age: Unknown

Series: Touhou

Occupation: Gatekeeper, Gardener, Martial Artist.

Brief Biography

Hong Meiling seems pretty transparent in many aspects, but all in all, there’s a lot about Meiling that nobody really knows. Meiling is a Youkai; Youkai being a term used loosely for just about any supernatural being from folklore or legend. Youkai are usually divided into categories, such as Vampires, Magicians, Fairies, Tengu… The list goes on. Many of the youkai within Meiling’s primary land of residence, Gensokyo, were native to Japan, the same didn’t go for all of course, and Meiling herself originates from China.

If anybody knows what category of youkai Meiling is exactly, they’ve done a very good job of keeping it a secret, and Meiling does too. Nor do people really know why she keeps it a secret. It could all be superstition over nothing; some youkai don’t fit into categories so easily, and simply show superhuman abilities or life-spans that surpass that of humans.

At some point in her distant past, Meiling came to Gensokyo from China, her homeland. What Meiling pursued in life before finding work with the Scarlet Family in Gensokyo, is also a mystery.

In spite of all that’s unknown about her, Meiling fits in just fine, and nobody really gives her much past or personal details much thought.

Personality (At a Glance)

It’s sometimes difficult to pin down exactly whether Meiling is an incredibly hard worker, or a lazy slacker. Somehow; it could even be a paradoxical mix of both. Through waking hours of hard work, and perhaps excessive Tai-Chi and exercises, Meiling tires herself at unpredictable hours of the day, and as such, may be seen to have slacking tendencies, but all the while, when her abilities are needed, she is always awake and ready to defend what she worked for.

Meiling puts across a tough image, verbally and physically, but all the while it’s not too difficult to slip past the dutiful tendencies and find her friendly side, as chatting to people whilst fulfilling her job as a gatekeeper isn’t remotely unheard of. Still, if one proved to be a hostile threat to herself or those she protects, she wouldn’t hesitate to attack. Meiling is often underestimated by her peers, and opponents, and she tries to quite adamantly prove otherwise, and again; this can lead to over-exertion on her part.

Social

Meiling is no alien to socializing with humans or youkai alike. Meiling very often indulged in chats with humans that may have passed by her gate whilst on duty, and she wasn’t much threat to humans either, unless intentionally provoked. When she gets going; Meiling can be a complete chatterbox, but depending on her company, she can also behave incredibly awkwardly.

She’s friendly with her strangers and peers, but doesn’t deal with enemies or aggressiveness in a particularly rational manner. And of course, as mentioned above, if threatened, even playfully, she can grow wary quite easily. Perhaps taking an overly defensive stance on all sides of life due to her often trying to prove herself as a worthy and capable guard and fighter.

Appearance and Physicality

Height: A very tall lass, standing at 6’5.

Weight: Meiling is far from small and skinny, with a considerable balance of muscle and curve. That, added onto her large frame, takes her up to 183lbs.

Clothing: Her garb resembles traditional Chinese clothing, her status as a guard is enforced somewhat by her beret and olive-colored scheme. She wears black ribbons on the ends of her braids, and another black ribbon around her neck. Depending on the heat or the scenario, Meiling can be seen both with or without some plain-colored pants underneath her long skirt.

Physique: From her towering height to her usually bare arms, Meiling boasts a powerful aura of strength through and through. Among many youkai, muscle doesn’t mean much, but to Meiling it’s very important, and as such, she’s notably toned by her excessive training (Rough Muscle Reference). Meiling has a large frame overall, aaaand, to avoid seeming like I’m completely dodging the subject intentionally, and to instead make it seem like I’m actually highlighting it intentionally in attempt to perhaps make it more amusing than saying it straight out; Meiling has some pretty considerable curves. The muscle probably helps with the back ache a bit. Plus she is sort of superhuman.

Pretty, Colorful Features: Meiling has aqua-colored eyes and a fairly average skin-tone. She’s not particularly pale or dark. Her favoritism for the color green shows through excessively, as other outfits she may wear will usually involve the same color scheme. Meiling’s long hair is quite a powerful red, two portions of it trailing down her front in long braids.

How she Holds Herself: Meiling usually stands with an air of confidence, even if that mood could be shot down quite easily depending on the scenario. She needs to give off a strong image for her work, and she’s pretty good at it too! She is also very aware of maintaining a healthy posture. Through her martial arts, and more specifically and especially; her Tai-Chi, she’s quite capable at holding herself with a grace that people don’t really expect from her too often, considering her reputation to lose her composure. She’s hardly a clown or a klutz, but she’s not known to be as cool as two cucumbers.

Abilities: Meiling’s core ability is the manipulation of Chi throughout her body, using this particular energy to amplify her already impressive physical strength and knowledge of Chinese martial arts. Like most youkai, Meiling is capable of casting projectile (rainbow!) bullets in various spell patterns, but she doesn’t excel at this as much as many others around her. However, she can use close-range projectile spells with considerable power, though the energy disperses before covering much distance.

Basically, if you’re at a distance from Meiling, you’re much better off, but the closer you are, the more danger you’ll be in.
